Garrison Artillery, shooting from the Ngahauranga forts in connection with the challenge shield competition put up a splendid record. At a range of three miles Captain Freeman’s battery scored twelve hits out of twelve shots, while Lieutenant Ells’ battery scored eight hits out of twelve shots, The barque Lutterworth, which was
dismasted in Cook Strait last month, and abandoned, and towed into Wellington two days later, is still in the possession of the Collector of Customs as Receiver of Wrecks. The owners wish to sell the vessel, but the salvors object, as they wish the question of salvage to bo settled by the Admiralty Committee, The Receiver of Wrecks has been advised by his solicitors that under the circumstances he cannot sell the barque, but may release her upon getting a bond from the owners to settle the salvage claims. The owners have agreed that the Union Co, is entitled to jEIOO for rescuing the officers and crew of the dismasted vessel.
Bart Cliitty Dean, postmaster at Palmerston South, who was admitted to a private hospital here last evening, was found this morning with his throat cut. It is supposed to be a case of suicide. At a sitting of the Arbitration Court today, in the case of Hughes v, Union S.S. Company, in which the company expressed willingness to pay the balance ol' i-82 due in a lump sum, Mr Justice Chapman said that where payments of lump sums were concerned it was the duty of the Court to investigate the matter of investment. Counsel said the money would go in maintaining Hughes and his family. Judge Chapman reiterated his view that it was the duty of the Court to enquire into the nature of the investments whenever any were to be made in respect of lump sums by way of compensation. The Athcnic, from London, lias a number of immigrants on board, whom the Post describes as a very likely lot.
