BOWLING.

OPENING OF TURANGANUI CLUB’

SEASON.

The pretty grounds of tbe Taranganoi Bawling Club were attractively deooratec with bunting yesterday afternoon, tht occasion being tbe opening of tbe green for tbe season. The weather, which hac been most unfavorable during the morn ing, broke at mid-day, and though heavy oloads passed overhead tbe temperatari kept dear, and allowed a large number ol visitors to assemble on the grounds, there beiDg a good attendanoe of tbe fair sex Notwithstanding the heavy rain of the morning the green was in splendid order, and as tbe afternoon wore on the rinks became very keen. It showed a considerable improvement on that of tbe past season, and tbe favorable comment: elicited from the players must be very gratifying to the caretaker, Mr G. Humphreys. In opening the green for tbe season tbe President (Mr G. Matlbcwson) said ht had no occasion to apologise for tbe condition of the green as he had at the opening on the previous year, for,the ground showed for itself. Ho welcomed tbe visitors, and hoped that the afternoon's play would be enjoyable. The members of the elub intended to do their beet foi bowls this season, and had applied for affiliation to the Northern Bowling Assooiation ; they would then be in a position ti compete with other olubs in tomnameats, and though they bad at present no hope cf defeating the older clubs, it would be at no very distant date when those clubs would have to look to their laurels. Amidst oheers, the President threw the j-iok and declared tbe green open. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Mattbawson and Skeet, and was maoh appreciated by visitors and players. Ii the play for the afternoon sides were ohosen by the President and vios-Presi-dent, and eome good games saw victory neoured by the President by 93 points to 88.
