An amendment that every public elementary school should devote some portion of school hours to religious instruction was carried by 256 to 57. The minority included, besides Lord Ripon and other members of the Government, Lords Roseberry and Ainpthill Government supporters argued that tho amendment was vague. The Opposition replied that it was in accordance with Ministerial declarations and the general spirit of the Bill,
Tho Manchester Guardian states that the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough had signed a separation agreement on the ground of incompatibility. In a subsequent contradiction tho paper states it is untrue that a deed of separation has yet been signed.
