A, Vowlcs pleaded guilty yesterday morning before Mr Parton, ‘ 8.M., w il-ii being on the licensed premises of the Iteeord iieign Hotel while under a prohibition order, Vowles stated that he was l using the hotel conveniences at the time, His Worship said defendant had been twice convicted before, once for procuring Jiipior, and also for being oil licensed premises. The excuse about hotel conveniences was till, nonsense. He fined defendant An with 7s costs, in default DO davs.
Another ba'c’a of cyclist* were up before Ur Barton, S.M., yesterday for breaches of tbo by-law 3. Harry Alley plealed guilty to riding a bicycle after dark withs cut a light, and was fined 10j and costa 7*. Erocft Somervell, on a similar charge, pleaded that when the effenoe wa3 coramuted ho was going to drill, and was late. Hia Worahip said ho could not lake drill as an excuse, and fined Sjunrvcil 10j, with cost* 7a. A, J, Z rohariah pleaded not guilty to riding a bicycle after dark without a light. It wa3 about a-quartor to seven when the constablo stopped him, and was certainly not dark. Constable H'sucox, on oath, stated that it was after 7.80 when bo saw defendant riding the bicycle, and was quite dark. Defendant went into the box, and said that on the evening in question ho was at ihs Theatre at 7 o'clock, and that Constable Hancox wu3 mistaken, His Worship di-mused the case. Mr Alston Coleman appeared for Charles Toylor, who was similarly oharg-d, and asked the Magistrate to dis miss the charge on the ground that it was nos dark at the time stated in the police information, 6.45, He pointed out that in the previous case the defendant had sworn that at the identical tour, i.e., 6 45, it was not dark, and the offence alleged to have been committed by his client occurred two days later. His Worship oonourred with Mr Coleman that it could not have been dark, and dismissed the eummone0. A. An old man was charged by tho police yoßtsrduy morning with excessive drinking, and brought into tho Court in a drunken state. When asked by Mr Barton if ho was willing to havo a prohibition order issued against him, he obstinately shook his head and Baid tho Magistrate was drunk, His Worship ordered him to be locked up until tho following momiDg, and he was loft until the other cases before tho Court concluded, on a seat in the Court. When tho Court was adjourned the man was nowhere to be found, having left unobserved.
