A storm unroofed the grandstand at Grafton racecourse and damaged many places on the outskirts of the town, the business portion escaping the worst of (he violence. The surrounding district suffered the most injury, crops and fruit trees sustaining very extensive damage. A farmer at Memahou was killed by lightning. The fruitgrowers’ conference passed a resolution in favor of co-operative fruit growing. The next conference was fixed for Adelaide. Melbourne, Oct. 17. At the annual sittings of the Council of the Congregational Union, the retiring President said he was ashamed to acknowledge the small remuneration of some ministers. If ever a strike was justified, though he did not incite such a revolutionary course, it would be in the case of some of their ministers.
