EDUCATION BOARD.

Special to the Times. Napier, last night. At tho meeting of tho Education Board to-day tho following appointments wero confirmed : Mr J. Kinder, B A , Gisborne, District High School, second assistant master; Miss M- K. Brownlee, mistress, Patutahi.

For eight out of thirteen vacancies (including Motu) advertised this month there were no applications. The Chairman stated that in some cases this was due to the difficulty assistant teachers found in obtaining accommodation at a reasonable figure. People of outlying districts should, he thought, be informed chat if they expected teachers to be sent to their schools they must do something themselves to iind accommodation for teachers at a reasonable cost. At present in some cases the cost of living absorbed nearly the whole salary of teachers. Settlers should offer reasonable and decent accommodation for boarding of teachers Rev. A. Grant said that the trouble was not simply duo to lack of accommodation. In his opinion the reduction of pupil teachers had resulted in a dearth of teachers, a thing they had apprehended, and to tliis ho thought the lack of applicants could bo attributed. Mr McLornon said he considered that the matter was of sufficient gravity to warrant them in making representations to tho Department, and lie moved that the subject be brought before the notice of the Minister of Education.

This was seconded by Mr Morgan and carried. Tno Secretary stated that tho Board would bo astounded if ho draw out a list of unesrtifioated teachers in the Board’s employ. Ha was not understating it when ho said there were fully ‘2O schools in charge of tsaobers without certificates. Xaspootor Hill said that they had more now than 20 years ago. The Rev.
