PEESS ASSOCIATION

Auckland, last night. Walter Humby confessed to Mr District Judge Kettle this morning that he had spent £260 since last Januaury largely in drinking and gambling. Humby was before tbe Court on charges of having been found drunk in North street, Newton, and having been found in tho Newton Hotel contrary to the terms of prohibition orders which existed against him. He pleaded guilty, and said he could not remember what hotels he went into, Ho visited several-

Mr Kettle: Have these hotelkeepers been served with notice of the prohibition order against tnis man ? Sub-inspector Gordon : Yes, your Worship, but there are so many prohibited persons now that it is difficult for hotelkeepers to l-reop count. His Worship (to accused) : I could

give you three months’ imprisonment, and I believe that would do you good and keep you away from drink. I’ll try you with a month to start with in Mount Eden. Your prohibition order expires on

November 4th. Will you consent to a renewal.

Accused : It will do no good, for I can get drink at hotels all the same.
