COOK MEMORIAL.

The warship Challenger arrived at Gisborne on Saturday, and the following Reception Committee wont oot by the Tuotoa to welcome the visitors:—The Mayor (Mr Towniey), the County Chairman (Oaptain Tucker), Messrs A, F. K-nnedy, F. J. Rowley, W. Gaudin (Memorial Committee), Rev. Dawson „ Tnomas, Gr. F. J. Lysnar, Oaptain BeaYef (Gi bo ns Rifies), Lieutenant Hamilton (East Coast Mounted Rifles), W. G. Feasor (manager U.S S. Co.), Dr. Sobomacher (tiurgeon-Oaptain Guborne Rifles), Oaptain Gumming (harbormaster), Mr O. White (Poverty Bay Olub), and press representatives. About a dozen of the officers were entertained at tbe Tittell Bruoe performance of 11 Sunday ” at His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday evening. The Parliamentary party arrived from Napier by the s.e. Tutanekai yesterday morning, and were officially welcomed by tbe Reception Committee. On arrival of the tug at wharf, they joioed the church parade, which was headed by the City Band, followed by a Dumber of returned oontingenters under Captain- Neale, a section of East Coast Mounted Rifles under Csptain CM b.ume, and the Gia» borne R Lies under Oaptain Beeie. Cep-< tain Brown represented the New Zealand staff, while Captain D. Cowan had oharge of the City Cadets. Colonel Porter waa also present. The tarn-out was a good one, and tbs men looked smart. The parade marohed by way cf Gladstone road to Holy Trinity Church, and was accompanied by a large number of o'tizens. Tbe oburch was decorated profusely with-flags for the State service, and extra eeating had to be provided to accommodate the large orowd that filled tbe chureb. The service, which was conduoted by the Rev. L D. Thomas, was bright and interesting, the sermon being much appro-, oiated by the congregation, as it was in-,' teresting, pithy, and not too long. The City Baud assisted in the mußioai part of the serviee, and just prior to its olose played tbe Hallelujah chorus, concluding the service with the National Anthem, . Tbe men then reformed into possession, and marohed back to the hall and dismissed. In the afternoon, the Parliamentary Party, consisting of the Hons. J. Osrroll, J. Thomson, J. A. Millar, Messrs H. J. Greenslade, F. La wry, A. T. Ngata, G. Witty, W. T. Wood, H. Poland, J. T. Hogan, T. Parata, 0. H. Mills, 0, H. Poole, J. MoLaohlao, W. T. Jennings, D Buddo ; also Mesdames Carroll and A. L D. Fraser, several members of the Hawka’s Bay Educational Board, the captain and offioers of the H.M S. Challenger, accompanied by the Mayor and several members of the Reception Committee, and the press, were driven out to the Te Arai Native Chureb. Hero the

parly inspected the chureb,'and the. Hod, J. Oarroll was welcomed by a small number of natives, who had evidently-gathered there to meet him.

Tbo return journey was made via Wae« renga-a-hika and Makauri, the whole trip oooupying about three and a half hours. Fortunately the weather, although inclined to be wet, held flop, aud the whole party enjoyed the trip very muob. The Mayor entertaioed several offioers of H.M.B. Challenger at his house last evening. PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY.

9.30 The visitors will attend the open* iog of the new public sohool, for whioh spi cial programme has been arranged by School Committee. 10.30 Procession forms at the fireball, and proceeds to Cook monument for the unveiling ceremony. Band cf H.M.S, Challenger, detachment of bluejackets, City Band, military veterans, returned oonsiDgentere, cadets, fire brigade, and general public will take pari. Salvation Army Band will also be included in pro* oession.

10.45—Th0 Tuatea arrives at whatf with band and detachment of bluejaokeSs from the Challenger.

11.0 The e.s. Tuatea will convey Parliamentary Party to the s,». Tntanekai with the objeot of joining the landing party in the ship’s boats. 11.30—Unveiling oeremony at site of Cook’s landing. Ministers, members of Parliament, and oaptain and officers of H.M.S. Challenger will form the landing party at Boat Harbor, and be received with a haka of weloome from the natives. The City Band will play the National Anthem, and tho Eohool children will sing.

His Worship the Mayor will reoeive the visitors.

The Hod, J. Carroll, Native Minister, will unveil the monument, and deliver an address, and the Challenger’s Band will play.

Other Ministers and visitors will also be asked to offer congratulations. The City Band will play 11 Rale, Britannia," and the oeremony will olose. 1.30 —Speoial train oarrying visitors and the public will leave for Karaka, returning from Karaka at 3.15, and reaching Gisborne at 4 80.

7 30—Grand complimentary ' sooial to the visitors at His Hsjesty’e Theatre, danoing, musical items, and short ad** dresses from visitors.
