OIL PROSPECTS.
DR. BELL’S VISIT. Dr. Ball, the chief of the Slate logical Department, returned south last Dight, after a good examination of the district for oil-bearing prospeots. He got back to town yesterday morning, having for several days had the advantage of being piloted around by Mr W. D. Lysnar, ohaitmau of directors of the Gisborne Oil Oompany. Tney traversed about 200 miles of the back country. Dr. Bell states that the indications for oil are as good as he has seen in New Zealand, but he considers it would be unwise for him to looate a site for boring witnout a detailed survey being made, otherwise be considers it would be only haphazard work to put down a bore. Oil migtit thus be struck by chance, or it might just be missed for the want of knowledge that he indioates In addition to the information be has himself ooileoted, Dr. Bell has had a deputy obtaining like information for. tber up the coast. In view of Dr. Bell’s intimation, the directors of the oompaay hays mads strong representations to the Government in the hope of having a detailed survey made as suggested by the Geologist.
