A DUNEDIN SENSATION.
CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER,
PRESS ASSOCIATION Dunedin, last night * The arrest of J. R. Hayne, a well-known chemist, on a charge of manslaughter of Margaret Kendrick, has caused some sen, sation. Hayne was brought up before Mr O C. Graham, S.M. Chief detective Herbert said an illegal operation on the woman Kendrick was alleged to have been performed on the 12th inst. She was sent to the hospital, and died there at 3 o’clock on Saturday morning, her dying dispositions having been taken by Mr Widdowson, S. M. The detective asked for a remand, as there had been no time to make inquiries, and said lie had been instructed to oppose the granting of bail. He might mention that accuused had on him a loaded revolver when arrested.
Mr Solomon, who appeared for Hayne, quoted authorities to show that bail should be granted. The Magistrate declined to take the responsibility of granting bail, and accused was remanded till next Saturday.
