RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

FIRBT ANNUAL MEETING

There was a large attendance at the first annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Rifie Association, held last evening, Captain Beere presiding. The following report of the Committee

was submitted by the hen. secretary and treasurer, Lieut. 0. Hellier Evans: — " Your Committee, in retiring from offiae, have much pleasure in laying before you the first report aud balance-sheet of the Association, and, in doing so, congratulate members on the success and sound fioancial position of the Association. Yon will remember that the Association was formed last March, and your thanks are due to Captain Beere, of the Gisborne Rifles, for his energy and for the trouble he took in inaugurating such a splendid institution, The first shooting meeting held by the As* sooiation took plaoe on Bister Monday at the East Coast Mounted R flea’ range at Makanri, and was in every way a euooess. The programme provided for three matohes, at 200, 500, and 6JO yards, with aggregate pcizes. Time, however, permitted a seven shot matoh (sweepstake) at 700 yards. Corporal Breingan (G.R.) won the aggregate (Captain Tucker’s trophy) and Private Rait (G.R.) secured second honors, Sergeant Morrison and Lieut. Tombleson being third. In all £2l 14s 6d was distributed in prize money, and was won by 24 compositors ; the total number competing was 48. Your thauks are due to the offioer commanding the East Coast Mounted Riflss for the use of tho range, whioh was specially fitted up with four targets for the Association mseting, to the Hon. James Carroll, M.H.R., Captain Tuoker, Messrs J. Townley, M, B. Mander, O. J. James Carroll; vioo patron, Colonel Porter, O.B.; president, his Worship tbe Mayo l- , Mr J. TowDley; vice-presidents, Captains Tucker and Warreo, Mejsr MoOredia, Messrs J. A. Harding, D. Barry, G. B. Oman, A. Hutchison, W. Miller, C. White, W. K. Chambers, J. W. Nolan, E. Murphy, A, F, j K9Dnedy, A. E. Watson, G. J. Black, Wi D. Lysnar, 0. J. Parker, W. B. Barker, Mander, W. F. Cederwell, H. White, Dewing, St. L’ger, W. F. Crawford, E. M. Hutohineon, T. Eliott, Sutherland, and captains of Rifle Clubs.

It was decided to hold the next competition on November 9.h at tho Kaiti range and tbe E .slot mooting at Makauri. The work done by the secretary during tho paet year was highly spoken of, and on tho motion of Ciptain Boere it was decided to present Lieut. Evans with a gift as ao appreciative token. Lieut. Evans suitably responded, and urg&d members to do all in their power to forward the interests of the Assoeiatiou, The utmost enthusiasm was taken in the proceedings.
