PRESS ASSOCIATION Auckland, last night. Crosby’s hotel at Karang3hake, owned by W. S. Montgomery, was dertroyed by fire, also the Volunteer Hall a-ij fining the hotel. The hotel was insured for £i2oo. aud the stock, furniture, etc., for £BSO, in tho New Zealand Company. The Volunteer Hall, owned by Mrs Montgomery, was insured in the New Zealand for £250. New Plymouth, last night, A fire at 2 o’olook this morniog at Waitara destroyed the Waitara hctsl, Dugdale’s oabinetmaker’s shop, and Sanson’s stationer’s shop aud billiard room, whioh Captain Young had only taken possession a few days ago. The insur anoes are : —The hotel building, £9OO in the Sun ; £350 on the stook and furniture in the Suo, £250 in the Commercial Union. Sampson’s shops £3OO, divided between, the South British and National; the billiard room end fittings, £l5O in the South British ; Dugdale’s stock, £250 in the Bun. About £l5O worth was saved from tho hotel. Captain Young (who recently paid £IBOO for the goodwill) escaped in his nightolothing, The eervants and boarders also lost everything. Sampson’s loss is estimated at £2OO over insurances, and Dugdale’s at over £IOO,
Later.—A housemaid was awakened by a orackfing noise in the hotal, and tho fire was boated in the dining room. No wtter being available, the plaoe was soon enveloped. By pulling down intervening buildings and dynamiting the burning portion, several premises, including the Waitara Mail, were saved. The licensee, Captain Young, late of the Otago Buffet. Wellington, is a heavy loser, having only taken possession a fortnight ago, and paid £ 3 for the lease. The building was ownel by D. Leslie, Auckland, and insured in the joint names of the owner aod the Waitara Harbor Board.
