It was deoided that at next championship meeting an open championship of New Zealand be inaugurated, to be decided by 36 holes, for a medal, play to be open to any pro fessional or amateur in any part of the world, and that monetary prizes of £25 and £lO be given to the most successful professionals. It was decided tbat the next meeting be held at Nipier. Invercargill, last night. Out of 26 applicants, Basil O. Bastian was to-day appointed engineer to the Southland County Council. He is a wellqualified local oivil engineer, 26 years of Bge, and well known in the colony as an oarsman.

At a meeting of the Borough Connoil to-night it was deoided to open the new munioipal theatre on the 14th November. The Governor and Lrdy Fiunket, and the Premier and Lady Ward are to be present.

Arrangements were completed to day for the ereotion of a nurses' home at the hospital, to cost £3OOO.
