EAST COAST NEWS.

SVAIPIRQ B'AiYi

From Our Own Correspondent.)

The residents of Waipiro Bay are to be complimented for the interest they are taking in the beautifying woik of their township. Waipiro has always held the first place on the Coast for its prettiness, and the work now being done will further advance it in the traveller’s eye as well as giving satisfaction of cheerfulness and beauty to the residents. Waipiro Bay is shortly to enjoy the privilege of a public hall—a long-felt want. Mr It. McCullough is the enI terprising gentleman, and is receiving warm congratulations from all quarters for his efforts

The lambing season is about over, and in about ten days or a fortnight docking operations will he commenc* ing. It is expected that there will be a very high percentage of lambs this year, owing undoubtedly to the very fine weather throughout the season ; bosides ihe mortality of ewes has been phenomenally small during the winter months. The local Mahutonga—Hare Matenga —is still at large, despite the efforts of Detective Brobarg and his mates. The task being such a difficult one, and with a big scope of country to work in, it is anticipated that it will take some time yet to lay hands on Matenga unless he commits another robbery shortly. However, Detective Broberg is determined not to bo beaten, and it is quite possible that in the long run his efforts will be sue*'

cessful. It is reported that Mr A. Neill, of Waipiro, has disposed of his Ma.ta property to Mr Christophers, of Gisborne, and formerly of Whakarau. Tho farm is situated at the back of Mr A. B. Williams' Ikungia station, and is j eminently adapted for sheepfarming. Mr Neill has been located there for the pa3t ten years. RAINFALL.

The rainfall recorded for August at Hauturu and Tokomaru Bay shows a total of 2.G2 ; maximum fall .79, pn the 12th ; number of days with rain, 18.
