The Harvard and Cambridge Universities beat race attracted a record attendance, including thousands of Americans. The enthusiasm was intense. Cambridge won the toss, and chose the Surrey side of the river. The boats got away at 4.29. Cambridge was smarter at the start, and was soon leading by a length. Passing Crabtree reaeh Cambridge had increased to two and a quarter lengths. The Hatvards putting on a spurt shot through Hammersmith bridge a length and a quarter in the wake of Cambridge, but tbe effort was valueless. Toough Harvard rowed a dogged, stern chase, Cambridge continued to improve the position, leading by three lengths at Barnes’, and eventually winning by two lengths in 19 min. 18 sec.
