DEFIANCE WRECK.
THE ENQUIRY.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Auckland, last night.
The nautical enquiry into tho wreck of the brigantine Defiance at Kaipara Harbor Opencd°to-day The captain of the vessel stated that just as ho was about to make a fifth tack going up the harbor the wind failed, and a current which ho had not known before carried the vessel in shore, the anchor failing to hold tho vessel. Ho further stated that he did not see any
danger signals by tho signalman. On the , Court stating they required the evidence ] of the signalman, the Collector ol Customs said it was difficult to take men away from lighthouses, and he did not think the Marino Department would agree to it. Mr Kettle, S M., remarked that it was a pity the Shipping and Seamen’s Act did not contain provision for allowing evidence in such inquiries to be taken before a Justicc of Peace, as the Court was often put to great trouble in nautical inquiries for this reason. The Collector undertook to try and secure the attendance of the signalman.
