The Munioipal Conference continued to» day. A motion in favor of the passing cf tbe Firo Brigades Bill was rejected for the following amendment : “ That in the opinion of this conference the Municipal Councils are bodies which should retain the management of fire brigades, and it will be Buffieisnt if Parliament decides that insuranae companies should pay part of the cost of maintenance of fire brigades; that clause 60 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1 , 1900, be amended to enable insurance companies to taka part in the management of brigades.” Suggested amendments in the matter of the law relating to air space were agreed to. A number of remits were referred to the Executive Committee. A remit in favor | of State businesses contributing voluntarily to the rates was passed. It was dec dad to recommend that all municipal bodiea should close their offiots for a fortnight at Christmas to secure a uniform holiday. A number of remits of minor importance were adopted, and the conference adjourned till to-morrow. Is was resolved that the RatingO’on Unimproved Values Act be amended, abolishing the present of rating, and fixing tbe rating power in the pound on the unimproved value without comparison to capital value.
