THE SEDDON GRANT.
(To the Editor of the Times.)
Sir, —I read with pleasure your leader in Friday’s issue re the grant to Mrs Seddon. Ido not think that any body, no matter what their political opinions may bo, will begrudge the late Richard I John Seddon the honor and thanks justly I due to him for his loog Bervica to the colony and the Empi-e ; but, I do think I that to call upon the people to provide a large sum of money for his family is absurd. Mr Seddon was a business man, henco his suooess, and I am perfectly sure that with the opportunities he had he did not forget his own. With the exoeption of a few, the people of New Zealand are fighting for a living, notwithstanding the great prosperity wo read about, and I do Dot thiDk that in any other part of tho world tho people are called upon more often to put their hands in their pockets than they are in—shall we say, Gisborne? I am, etc-, POOR BUT NOT MEAN.
