I’RESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, last night. An anti-gambling demonstration promoted by the Council of Churches to-might was attende 1 by about 100 people. On tho motion of the Bishop of Wellington a resolution was carried deploring the prevalence of gambling and calling upon cicizms to assist its suppression. Other resolutions were passed, urging the abolition of the totalizator, the limitation of race meetings, the more effectual suppression of street betting, and repeal of the power held by tho Colonial Secretary to grant the permits for raffles.
Christchurch, last night. The ladies’ championship golf meeting concluded to day, when the final was played oS, between Mrs Bidwell, °r r^ airara Pa, and Miss Mendelsohn, of rimafu. Ihe game was close and brilliantly played, and was only won by Mrs Bidwell at the 20ch hole with one up.
Auckland, last night. At the civil sittings of the Auckland Supreme Court, before His Honor Air J ustice Edwards, Mary Rogers claimed from the Deyonport Borougn Council £ISOO damages for alleged injuries received by her late husband tinder circumstances which pointed to carelessness on the part of the Devooport Borough Council’s officer She sued for the benefit of herself and children. On November last the deceased was in charge | °f horses near the Devonport vyharf, when the horses became startled by the testing of water by a Counpil official, and Rogers was killed. After hearing evidence as to the circumstances attending the accident the i ury awarded £925 damages, to be divided between Mrs Rogers and her children.
