Fashion in Nurses’ Uniforms
CRITICISMS BY DR McGREGOR,
'(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. Tbo following interesting paragraph on the Bubject of tho uniforms and dross of hospital nurses appears in the report of the Inspector-Genoral of Hospitals (Dr McGregor), whxh was laid on the table of the House to-day; “ A few words ctq the sulj ct of nurses’ uniforms has rea'ly beoomo necessary, Washing dresses,
white aprons, and removable sleeves repre--7 sent the abso'ute oleanliness and neatness, together with tbo freedom of movement 1 required io carrying out tho duties of sick nurses. Of late thero is, with regret to be I observed, an increasing tendency for nurseß on duty to wear dangling chains numerous brooches, rings, eto. Even somo hospital matrons adopt this habit. I have counted as many as five brooches worn at the same t'me by a matron in the North Island. Then, consider the cap. It originated with the idea of covering the hair. Does it do so now '? The nurse’s cap has shrunk into a small pieoe of starched linen, crowning an edifice of pads and looso' i hair. Too matrons are wrong in per- 1 tmiitmg this, and a surgeon who is * properly partied sr about the sorubbing of ? hands and arms becomes inconsistent * when he eubmi'a to untidy beads of hair in the ward arc! operating room. The c Wellington Hospital must be exempted 6 freni the foregoing etr'etures.. Tbe nurses i being trained thero are neat and tidy in h uniform, and aro not allowed to wear hair C pads and jewellery whilst on duty. e ]
