A Retreat for Inebriates.

(Special to Times.) Wellington, iast night. When Mr Pools was speaking on the Governor's speech, ho was interrupted by a muttered interjection from the member for Ashburton. Mr Poole paused for a moment or two, looked eteadily in the direction of the interrupter, and then deliberately and with considerable emphasis, said : " Sir, the honorable member for Ashburton is talking in his sleep.” At this members roared with laughter, and even cheered Mr Poole. Mr McLaohlan was at once upon his feet with soma retort, but his voioe was drowned in the laughter and cheers with which Mr Poole’s statement was greoted, After another pause, Mr Poole continued with renewed emphasis : 11 1 am sorry to think, sir, that this House has lately beootne a retreat for inebriates. I pity the victim, and 1 hate the oause.” Dead silenco followed these rematk?, which undoubtedly created a sensation, both on tho floor of the House and in tha galleries, but the remarks were allowed to go unchallenged, no member of the Ministry and no private member taking the slightest objection to it.

There are 1 bounders ’ who go into that gollory (ories if order)—women bounders—(further cries of order)—hut it dees not matter ; I know who they are. I say that members ought to have that privilege extended to them either for their wives or daughters ” I support the motion of the hoD. member.

During Mr Hornsby’s speech on the Address-in-Reply to-night, Mr MoLaohjan made several interjeotions. As Mr Hornsby, whose seat is immediately behind thdt I of Mr MoLaehlaD, was about to conclude I his remarks, he said : 11 At the risk of being considered hypersensitive, I must can I your attention, sir, to the conduct of the I member for AshburtoD. It has gone so long that I must appeal to you to protect the House, or at least this portion of the House, against this conduct. He uses bad language, and ho comes into the Houss in a state in which no man should enter ! the Parliament of this country. Sir, I appeal to ycu to protcot this House and the members against what hss been goiog on.” He was, however, at this point interrupted by Mr Massey, who wished to make a persona! explanation in regard to a statement in Mr Hornsby’s speeoh.
