SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Tho monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening, there being present: Messrs Somervell t (chairman), Nisbett, Colley, Wildish, DartOD, Brown, Johnston, and Nield. Tbe Sohool Committee’s Association wrote defining the duties of the secretary as requested by the school committee’s meeting. 1 The Education Board wrote forwarding - a refund on the repairs to the caretaker’s dwelling. The visiting committee wrote suggesting certain improvements mentioned by the headmaster. In moving that the matters embodied in the report be given effect to, Mr Darton advocated the drawing up of a scheme for laying out the grounds in a systematic manner. Gisborne bad one of the best schools in the Noith Island, and the grounds should be in keeping with the buildiQg. After discussion a committee consisting of Messrs JohnstoD, Darton, Ooljey, Wildish, and Brown were appointed to go \ into the matter and submit a report to be laid before the next meeting of fhe Education Board, Mr Darton said that he had brought < under tbe notice of the Board in Napier—*, the matter of the new sohoole, and the Beard had authorised them to obtain dpal det-ks for the school frpm the third standard up, and he suggested that tendprs be called at once. Tbe headmaster's report was read, in which he drew attention to the families who W6re not attending sohool, one having changed sohool to avoid the attendance regulation. After discussion it was decided that members of tbe committee visit the parents before harsher measures were \ taken. The circular in regard to Bohool childdren attending the New Zealand Exhibition was read, and on the motion of Mr Colley it was deoided to publish it. Mr Rowley explained that the Christmas holidays would oommence shortly before Christmas, and tho children would go down immediately upon resuming, so that thi* e would bn ~,, ero.-k. Mr Johnston said that tbe boys would be inoluded In the cadeis, but it would U3f an including tbe girls of tbe 6.h standard.
A lively discussion followed in regard to the notice of motion to be brought before the next meeting of the Board by ono cf the members of tfce north ward, Mr W. Morgan. Mr Brown said he had disoussed the motion with Mr Morgan, and after careful consideration he was of rpioion that the motion was contrary to tho Act, and he for one was dicidodly averse to it. Tbe motion ect forth that when mire than three names were sent baok by the Board the committee ebou’d bo asked to give a reason fer its selfoiion. Mr Colley stated that it was not always the man with the highest qualifications
that made the best teacher. They m’ght have speoiol reasons for making the selection, He could not see why they should give their reasons. Mr Dartcn explained why tbe motion had been brought forward. It was really to assist the oommitiee.
Other members spoke against the proposed motion, and it was deoided on the motion of Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Colley, that the following motion be sent to their representatives and to the Board : “ That this committee protests against the notice of motion by Mr Morgatr re selection of teachers, Bnd that the Act be striotly adhered to ”
