Active operations on the oil fbld have now seriously commencjd, The Taranaki Petroleum Company baa started to sink Nj. 2 bore, wh’c'i is expected !o take four months to sink. 0 i Tuesday the company also commenced clearing out un old abau djuod well known as Samuel's No. 3. This well struok oil, but in those days the water difficulty could not be overcome. Mr Fair has sunk 12 feet preparatory to drilling and sand-pumping the bore to I olear it. To day pure oil commenced to bubble up into the shaft, and the pressure gradually increased. Oil was bated cut in buckets. The success of this bote is already assured, as the same method will bo adopted to shut off the water as in the Moluroa bore. It is expeoted to take only six weeks to clear and case this bore. The Moturoa well is stronger than ever, oil ocz'ng from every joint in the easing.
