THE SCOW MAY.

j Shortly after three o’olock yesterday afternoon the Gisborne Shoepfarmors’ p.s. Kotaro rotumod from Tokima'u Bay with tho scow May in tow. Too May, wbioh had been lying stranded on the boacb at Tokomaru for the past fortnight, presented a very weather beaten appooranos, (bo railing beiDg carried away inplaeisand tho deck fittings and other portions of ihe

vessel above the watoilino showing ovidoccos of the buffeting that tho vessel had received. The scow, under tho command of Captain Bpargo, and with a craw of four hands, left Auckland on tho 12th ult.. in company with the schooner Aotoa and tho kelch Bir Henry. Tokomaru Bay was reached on the 28tb, the vessol being

forced to shelter at Mercury harbor for 10 days. Captain Spargo had made preparations for beaching the ecow for the pur pose of unloading the ca r go of building material, but tho anchor cirried away and the voseel took tha beach broadside on. A nasty sea got up, sweeping over the vessel

and buffeting it with considerable force. The scow was htu'ed up out of danger as the tide rose. An unsuccessful attempt was mado by the s.p. Haupiri, by moans of a heavy anchor, to haul the vessel off, but tho tide was low and the eoow would net float. The s.p. Ketare commenced operations on Monday, the tide still being low, and at 2 o’clock yestc-rdiy morning tho scow was successfully hedged off. Captain Sewell commenced to tow tho vessel to port three hours later, fioe weather fating experienced until off Gable Eod Foreland, when a

strong south-easterly breeze was met. The scow, which is a fairly old boat, does not appear to have sustained any structural damage. Tho sheathing has bec-n torn off in p'ac;p, pails of tha bulwatks are missing, and tho raising of a littlo eau ; king appear to bo the ohitf <x tend of the injury, but the full extend of the damage will not bo ascertained until the vessrl bar been placed on tbc slip and overhauled, for which purpose she was brought to port. Tho eoow is owned by Mr D. Bryant, of Auckland.
