Tho members cf tho City Band aro to bo congratulated on the excalleuto of the oouoort which last evening largo an audtonoe at Hts Majesty’s. Too programme being wisely soleotod was puroly popular, aud appealed to all tastes. Tbe City Baud, which is in excellent form and shows ca'eful training, rendered tho overture, “ Smithy in the Wto.ls,” in good style. Mr Brownlee’s pleasing baritone voice was hoard to advantage in 1 Tue Russian Seng/’ which was received with much applause. Miss Madeline Knight received an ovation from tho huge uudi once, and doligbtcd all present with tho "Soul’s Awakening,” a song with arnp'o scope to display tho riohness of'Miss Knight’s beautiful m azo-contralto voioe. Bssidjs being possessed of ti raro voice, the voca'ist has in addition thereto the
artistic temperament which qualifioi her us an artist. As tin ei core, Miss. Kuigut sang with exquisite pathos Tes t s " Good by which truly dshghtod f.ii present, Too instrumental quart-t o rec.-ived mus’eiinliko treatnunt at iho hands of Miss Booth, Messrs Brownlee, Adair, und Massey. The Misses Pearce wore deservedly successful in the Spanish sketch, which was muoh enjayrd, Mrs Collins, who has an excellent voice, sang wish tender feeliug " Douglas Gordon, whioh was keenly appreciated by her auditors. This lady has much culture and musical ab lay, and will undoubtedly be an acquisition to Gisborne musioal oiroles. Ia response to a vociferous oocoro Mrs Col lias sang in an artistic style "Home. Sweet Homo.” In her stcond number, ” The Irish Immigrant," Mrs Collins received a most enthusiastic onco'o, responding with ” Good Night, Lttle Love. Miss Rjdstone, who is weii known to Gisborne audience?, has made remarkable improvement of lato in her fu 1, rich vo f C’, and gave a musical treat in " Love tho Pedlar,” a song which suits her vo ce admirably. Io response to an uudm'iablo encore Miss Radstorao sang with most pleasing effect ” Absent." The Irish sketch by the Misses Pivker and R’.deil was an excellent ilom, and warm y encored, as also was Me Laodou’s humorous song, 11 Take your U nbrolla.” Mr London sang as an c-uco:e ' Come Down for Nails.” Mr Galloway created a mmt favorable impression in the vccal number,
u A Soldier’s Song,” and in responso to an encore, gave 11 Ttuo Tll Death,' most successfully. The fk'rt dance by the Misses Ohrisp and Martin, w.as well performed, as also was the club drill by tho High School pupils, both items being repeated. The duet, ” Ob, Fairy Wand, had I the Power,” by Miss Knight and Mr Brownlee, was exquisitely treated, and was admittedly one ot tho gems of tho evening. » Tho Golden Duatman,” which was heartily encored. The accompaniments wore Mrs Browoloe, Miss McLhono, aud Mr Maasoy. The piano used at the concert was kmdiy lonb hy Messrs ObrUp and San. As a result of the concert a substantial amount abonld accrue to Mu funds of the Band, Special mentiuii Mi mid be made of tbe services of Mr A. M. Pickfoid, Secretary of tbs Band, for tho assiduous manner in which he worked towards tho success of the ccnc rt.
