GISBORNE RIFLES SOCIAL.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES AND AWARDS. B-S&s—s There was a crowded gathering at Whinray’a Hall last evening on the occaeicn of the monster birthday social given by the Gisborne R'fles. Excellent arrangements had been made for the function, and the evening passed oil without the sligbeet hitch, the opinion being generally expressed that the social should be made an annual one. Captain Beere, in welcoming those present, expressed regret that the building should have been too small to provide comfortable danoing room for all present, but the Company had been unable to secure His Majesty’s Theatre on account of a previous engagement. The floor was found by dancers to be in the most perfect order, and the very beat of music was supplied by Miss Moore (piano) and Liohtwark (violin). Mr A. P. Hailey had the catering in hand, whioh was a sufficient guarantee that nothing was wanting on that score. Sergeant Scott ' made a most successful secretary, and the following members of the committee also ■ lent valuable assistance: Captain Beere, , Lieut. Mitchell, Color-Sergesnt Cave, i Qoartermaster-Sergt. Williams, Corporals i 8.-itngan, Lyford, Somervell, Hingston, i Lanoe-Corporal Whinray, and Privates Bait, Beere, Briengau, Conor, McPherson, Higham, and Schiebe. Messrs W. Webb, Briengen, and Condor efficiently discharged the duties of Masters of Ceremonies. At 10 o’clock a presentation of prfz’s and awards was made by Oapt. Bsere, who was suppoited by Lieut. Mitohell, Capt. Beere explained the conditions of the several competitions for which pr;z?s were awarded, and also ackcotvledged the kindness of the donors of the different trophies. 1 There waß, he said, a number Gf prizes j still in hand whioh had to tc fired for. The following prizes were then presented : New Yeat’a Day competitions—Class A : Private Bait, a hat presented by Mr RobertsoD. Class R : Corporal Holmes, a hat presented by Adair Bros.; 2nd prizr, Corporal Somervell, medal presented by Mr It Seymour; 3rd prize, Sergt. Taylor, a box of tea presented by Mr W. J. Cox. Class C: Private Sciabr, bat presented ty Mr J. W. Cock, The second prize in this oompelition was won by Corp. Breingan, but as bo considered he should havequa'i lied for Claes B ho generously gave way, and tbo prize therefore went to Sergearit Scott, the popular secretary. Thepr'ze was a bcx of tbo famous Lyrdt soap, presented by Q lartermaeter-Sergeant Wil liams, and the rcc’pieDt was accorded quite an ovation ns ho came forward to claim his order. The third prizr in this class, a medal presented by Mr W. Good, went to Private J. Sampey, January 18:h competition : Ist priz", trophy presented by Dalrymple Bros,, Borgeant Taylor ; 2ad, trophy by Parnell and Co , Private Rai*. RaDge pr'zes of 5s each in this cla ; s wore presented to Corporals Lyford and Breingan, and Private D'Arvill. Qaarlcrmaster-Sorgeant Cave’s medal was won by Privato Rait. Sorvioa stars. —Captain Beero explained that for every three years’ service a vblunteer obtained a star, and after nine years a gold sta\ No one had yet served nine years, but they had several volunteers who bad served six yoars, He then presented I the following Six years’ servioe : Qaartermaster-Sergt. Williams, Sergeant Warner, Sergeant [ Taylor. Three years’ service: Sergeant Scott Sergeant J. Somervell, Corpora's Somer* veil and Breingan, Lance-Corporal Hingston, Privates Clark, Moore, MoPherson, I Pritchard, Sheen, Sargisson, Williams. The Championship Belt, whioh was won y Private Itait, war presented, on a revious occasion, but mention was made of the fact by Captain Beere, who complimented Privato Rait on his success. Amongst the priz-a not yofc fired for are two pairs of field glasses presented by Messrs L D. Na'ban and W. Miller, a biscuit-barrel by Mr J. Townley, and other smaller trophies. A number of musical items were given during tbe evening, songs being contributed by Mrs McOoomb, Lioutenant Mitchell, and Mr Trent. DanoiDg was continued with spirit until an early hour this morning.
