MURDEROUS ATTACKS.
I’KESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, last night. News comes from Fiji of a murderous assault on Mr Joseph Beit, manager of the Ooicnial Sugar Company’s Malovu estate, at Lautoka, who bas under his charge about two hundred East India immigranls Four Indians attacked him while be wes asleep, with an axe end large cane knives, and butchered bina in a horrible manner. He will have to have his leg amputated, but there is a hope that he may recover.
Dan O’Dowd, lioensoe of tho Ba Hotel, returning home unexpectedly after a visit to Lautoka, found Philip Pflogar, owner of the hotel leased by O’Dowd, in the hotel wi h Mrs O'Dowd after closing hours. It is alleged bo found them in tbo dark, and di o’oarged five revolver shot) at them. Fflugor received one bullet in tbo a-m, aud Mrs O'Dowd two bullets in the arms aud one in tbe broas'. Tbo wcunds were serious, but not fatal. Fflug r ran to tbe sugar mil, and Mrs O’Dowd took refuge with some friends. o‘Dowd is a New Zralander, and a brother to Fiaok O’Dowd, once licensee of the Criterion Hotel, Auckland. Mrs O’Dowd is also a New Zealander and a mother of two children.
