A SUICIDE

I’RESS ASSOCIATION Cbristoburcb,.las« night. A martitd man named James Pope, aged 34 years, living at Governor’s Bay, at the head of Lyttelton harbor, shot himself through the head with a revolver yesterday evening.

A CALLOUS FATHER. PRESS ASSOCIATION Lyttelton, last night. On Saturday evening James P«-pe, 41 years of age, a market gardener, residing at Governor’s Bay, at tho head of Lyttelton Harbor, committed suicide by blowing his head off with a gun beforo the eyes of his fonrteen-year old daughter. Mrs Pope states that her husband bad complained of ill health for some time. Two months ago he consulted a doctor, who advised him to go to tbe hospital for troatmen’. He refused, and frequently threatened suicide. He made an unsuccessful attempt to ahoot himself previously when under the ioflaenoe of liquor. He left homo on Saturday afternoon to shoot rabbits, and afterwards went to a hotel, where he had two drinks. His wife went to look for him She missed her husband, who went homo. He met bis little daughter at tho door, placed the muzzle of tho gun in his mouth, pressed the trigger with bis fact, and blew out his brains through the sop of his head. The body wss brought to Lyttelton, where an inquest will be held on Monday.
