In view of recent distressing occurrences a sensational report came to hand lasi night. Mr Brocklebank was riding to town wheD he saw what he was convinced was a rocket fired from the dirsotion of Wainni beaoh. The statement coming from Buoh a trustworthy source every effort waa at once made to ascertain whether or not a miatake had been made. The weather boing su thick along the Coast praotioally nothing could ho seen. From Paksrae, Tatapouri, and Mrs W. Cooper’s enquiries were made, all having the same reply, that neither vessel nor rockets had been seen. Others in town beside Mr Brooklebsnk saw the supposed rocket, but it is not known whether it was the one thing or whether there was more than one.

At nine o’clock the steamer Karoro set out to make searoh, there being on board Mr Caderwall, manager o£ tho Gisborne Shoepfarmers’ Frozen Meat Company ; Captain Sewel', tho Company’s Marine Superintendent, end Captain Palmer. The vessel proceeded past Wainui without discovering anything, but the fog was so dense along ths Coast lino that praotioolly nothing could bo Been. Great care had to be taken in the handling of the vessel in such a fog, and on returning to port, the Karoro oast anchor lot some time, so that no undue risk would bo taken, it being impossible to piok up the leading lights until well into the Bay. The Karoro was borthed at the wharf again at 11 85 p.m-, und tho dealing up of the mystery had to ba left until daylight.
