PRESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, laßt night. A return issued by the RegistrarGeneral gives the population of each provincial district with numerical and centesimal increase since March, 1901. Wellington stands first for rate of progress with an increase of 27.12 per cent in five years and one month. Auckland comes next with 20.42 per cent, and Hawke’s Bay third with 18 29 per cent, etc. „
The details are as follows Province : Auckland, population—l9oll7s,93B, 1906 211,856, increase—numerical 35,918, centesimal 20.42; Taranaki, 37,855, 43,404, 5,549,14.66 ; Hawke’s Bay, 35,424,41,938, 6,514,18.39 ; Wellington, 141,354, 179,693, 38,339,27.12; Marlborough, 13,326,-14,356, I, 7.73 ; Nelson, 37,915, 41,768, 3,853, 10.16; Westland, 14,506, 15,427, 921, 6.35; Canterbury, 143,041,159,051, 16,010, 11. Otago, 173,145, 180,944, 7,799, 4.50. it- Out of a total of 2,365 half castes m April, 1906, the provincial district of Auckland had 1,555, Wellington 220, and Otago 238. Out of a total of 2,493 Chinese, Otago had 808, Wellington 657, Westland 3U9. Auckland 261, Nelson 197, and Canterbury 117.
