The nautical investigation into the question of whether the steamer Sqall failed to go to the assistance of the Muriwai when the latter broke her tail shaft on Manukau bar on June 2nd, had .to be abandoned, the section of the Shipping and Seamen’s Act applying only to New Zealand registered vessels, and the Squall being registered at Liverpool, though owned here, the Court had no jurisdiction, so that the duty of assisting distressed ships in New Zealand waters is imposed solely on Now Zealand registered vessels. It was also pointed out that the regulations governing aquatical couila were faulty, containing no provision for notification of officers concerned, or tho date and place of enquiry or wustilutioi) «f the court.
