Commenting on the action of Natal and the Transvaal in suspending the duties on wheat Hour, the Cape press remarks that it will not aliect the Cape much, since they cannot grow enough wheat for their own consumption ; nevertheless, this power of . suspension strains the loyalty of other parties to tho Customs union. A memorial against the Federal Parliament’s Home Rule resolutions has been presented, to Lord Northcote, and requests him to forward it to the King. The memorial bears one hundred thousand signatures from all the States, and is nearly a mile in length.
With reference to the cable that the promoters of the new mail contract are likely to receive an aggregate subsidy of a quarter of a million a year, Mr Deakin says the contract of the Federal Government is complete in itself, the subsidy being £125,000. He is inclined to think the company is making arrangements other than those with the Federal Government, possibly with New Zealand. Beyond that he knows nothing. The New Zealand horso Nonotto has been sold for four hundred and fifty guineas, and goes to the stud in Queensland.
