DR. POMARE’S REPORT.
(Per Press ABaocdation.) Auckland, last night. Dr, Pomara returned by the Haurcto to-day from the Cook Islands, where he has been four months inquiring into the sanitary conditions of tbe natives. He says the disease to be most dreaded in the iiiands is tubercalosis and diseases having a syphilitic orgin, to both of . which most of the deaths at the islands are traced. He will recommend the Government to take drastio steps to oops with these diseases. Elephantias is very prevalent at Rarotonga and Aitutaki. Dr. Pomare’s report to the Government will also contain recommendations to prevent the further spread of leprosy. A census of the Cook and Northern Islands shows the total native population to be 8378, exclusive of 196 natiyes temporarily absent. Europeans and foreigners total 140.
