SCHOOL CONTROL.
DEPARTMENT AND NATIVES.
(Par Praia Association.) Napier, last night.. The Education Board was in Committee with Messrs Hogben and Bird, of the Education Department, till late yesterday afternoon, considering the question of schools at Tuhara and Nuhaka, and the matter of mixed schools generally. On rrsumimr it was reported that the following resolution had been adopted : “ That the Board having heard the InspectorGeneral, Mr Hogben, and Mr Bird, Inspector of Native Schools, on the matter of Native schools and European schools, is of opinion (1) that in districts whcreV Europeans are in a predominating ma- \ jority, such schools should be under the $ Board ; (2) that in districts where Natives are in a predominating majority such schools should be under the Education Department; (3) that in any Native school district where Natives become extensively Europeanised schools should be transferred to the Board’s jurisdiction; (4) that Tuhara remain a Native school district; (5) that the instruction given in the Nuhaka school is sufficient, and that no school be erected, there at present.” The motion passed .in Committee wa* confirmed. Messr* Hogben and Bird leave for Gisborne by Friday night’s steamer.
