CRICKET.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING.

Tho meeting convened by the Poverty Bay Cricket Association was held in the Farmers’ Union Olub rooms, Masonic Buildings, last evening, and was attended by upwards of 40 oit’zenß Mr Cyril White was voted to the chair, and read the oi r cular convening the meeting, which was to consider ways and means for the laying diwu of a turf wicket, fostering school cricket, and the engagement of a groundsman and coach. After disoussioo, Mr W. Gibson moved' that a committee be appointed to give effect to tbe suggestions embodied in the ciroular. lo speaking to the motion the mover slated that the cricketers of the district had come to the conclusion that the time had arrived when a first olass turf wicket should be laid down, and a groundsman ongßged to look aftor the ground and also aoc as coaoh. It was alco deemed of great importance that the game should be encouraged amongst the public schools of the district. Mr H. E. Maude seconded the motion, and made a strong speech in support of the enoouragement of the game amongst schoolboys. It only wanted the matter to be taken in hand in the proper manner fot the Association to be self supporting in a few years’ time, with a first-class turf wicket, groundsman and ooaob, and the game general amongst the schoolboys. The Chairman enquired as to what tenure the Association held with regard to Victoria Domain.

It was explained that the Association at present held a three years’ lease from the Poverty Bay llagby Union, and Mr W. Miller, chairman of the Management Committee of tbe Bugby Uaion, stated that a fresh agreement oould be drawn out with the Bugby Union, who were only too willing to assist the cricketers, as anything they did to improve the ground was for the benefit of football and all branobes of sport.

Afier discussion, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr W. Miller, secoaded by Mr A. F. Kennedy, that tbe conjmittpe consist of 16 members, aud tbe following gent'emen were elected, with power to add t) their number Messrs Cyril White, A. F. Kennedy, J. W. Nolan, A. W. Bees, G. B. Oman, B G. Hallamore, B E. Hill, W. Miller, H. E. Maude, W. Gibson, C. B Neale, J R. Gardiner, A. H Hodge, H. B. Cato, J. V. Maodonald, and G. K Pasley. Mr J. S. Wauehop intimated that if any move was made to introduce the game into the publio schools the Crioket Association oould rely on the hearty 00-opera-tion of the masters.

Mr Oman proposed that five form a quorum. Seconded by Mr White, and oarried.

Mr Kennedy suggested that eaoh member of the oommittee, in order to form a nuoleus for tbp fund, should contribute a guinea.

The proposal met with a hearty response, and in less than ten minutes a sum of 16 guineas was laid on ths table. Mr Oman moved that, in order to show that those present were in earnest in the matter, eaoh person Bboqld donate §3 to the fund,

This was parried with applause and readily complied with. Messrs Kennedy, Miller, Hodge, aud the Chairman expressed tljoir pleasnro at the large attendance at tho meeting and tho practical interest shown in the scheme for the betterment of the game. At the conclusion of the meeting, the committee met, when Mr Cyril White was elected Chairman; Mr Kennedy, ViceChairman i' Mr 0. K- Olsen, Secretary; Mr Miller, Treasurer. The Chairman, Treasurer, aud Mr Kennedy were authorised to sign cheques, It was resolved that tiic Committco meet on Wednesday evening next at 7.60 p.m., in the Masonic Hotel. The whole proceedings were characterised by the utmost enthusiasm, and tho busiijcss-like manner in which the fund was commenced, aud the strong committee appointed augurs well for the successful carrying out of the objects for which the meefing was called, The meeting was the most successful ever held in connection with cricket in

this district, and proves there Is a great deal of interest taken in the game by many outside those actually engaged in tho g ummer pastime.
