A DOMESTIC TRAGEDY.
A WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED
Wellington, Monday.
There were some tragic features connected with a violent assault case oommitted in Cuba street shortly before eight o’clock on Saturday night. The victim of the assault was Mrs Maria Rosina Eleanor Mielsob, who is at present an inmate of the hospital suffering from a fracture of tho skull, alleged to have been caused by a blow from an ax 9. The patient’s husband is Hans Max Mielsob, a wharf laborer, 82 years of age, who was recently fined in tho Magistrate’s Court 40s, or in default one month’s imprisonment, for having assaulted bis wife by severely biting her noso &t the same sitting of the Court Mrs Mielsch applied for a separation order against her husband, and got it with bis consent. Sinoe then Mielsch has been living at a house in Cuba street, ocoupied by Mr Nils Rasmussen, a Harbor Board employee, and his wife has been lodged in Garrett street, off Cuba Btreet.
By some means, which have not yet been disclosed, the parties met on Satucday evening, and in an apparently affectionate mood went to Mrs Rasmussen’s
boose. Mielsch introduced his wife to his landlord, and then oonveraed with her ia Orerman, which Mr Basmussen could not undei stand. Daring the conversation, Mielsoh embraced his wife and kissed her. Subsequently he took up her umbrella and handbag, and induoed her to leave the place, os Mr Basmussen thought, to go to her lodgings. She appeared reluotant to go, but Mielsch took her by the arm and persuaded her to accompany him out of the door.
The parties had not been away many minutes before Mr Rasmussen heard a woman soieaming in the back yard. He hastened outside, and found Mrs Mielsob lying on tbo ground, bleeding from the head, but oould see no traoe of her husband. He endeavored to assist her, and then oalled in Constable O'Connor and a dootor.
The constable found a blood-stained axe in the yard, and after the patient had been temporarily treated by the dootor took her io the hospital, where it was found that there was jußt a slight possibility of her recovering. Inspeotor Ellison and Chief-Dstsotive McGrath yeetorday went to the hospital.

Sbo was progressing as well as oould bo oxpootod, but she was not to bo excited on any ncoount. Mielsob is a short sturdy man, of an oxoitablo disposition. Tho assault for which ho was rooontly fined was oemmittod on Saturday evening, Juno 9. Prior to tho assault, his wife wont to Mount Cook polioo station and lodged a oomplaint about him, and got a oonstablo to aooornpany her to apartments in wbioh she and hor husband wore staying. Miolsoh was homo when they arrived there, and soon ongagod in a heated conversation with his I wife. This conversation ended in Mieleoh I knocking her down and falling on her. Rising up, tbe woman oriod out that hor I nose had been bitten. Tho oonstab’o I examined it, and found it bleeding and I bearing teeth marks. Tne husband ran I out of the front door and round into tbo I hick yard. The constable obased him, I but Miolsch eluded him by scaling several I fenoes in the looality. On tho following I Monday Mrs Miolsoh had a warrant issued I for his apprehension, and it was executed I by tho polioo on the Tuesday. Tho oharge I was investigated by Dr. A. MoArthur, 8.M., on the Friday, when Mielsoh pleaded I guilty, and explained to a German inter- I preter that the trouble had been oaußod I through his wife refusing to get up and oock bis breakfast for him.
Mrs Mielsoh is about 50 years of age, she has been married twice, and has a grown-up family by her former husband. Mielsch is said to have served in tho German army, and to have come out here as a fireman. He had only been married about four montbß.
