BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tbe ordinary mealing of the Gisborne Borough Couooil was held last evening, wbsn the following members were present His Wrrship the Mayor, Ora Bees, Wbinray, Colley. Webo, and Bberidan. THE PREMIER'S DEATH,
On the mo'ion of the Mayor, tho Council p issed a resolution deeply sympathising with tho family of the late Premier in their sad bereavement.
The Mayor stated that as Cr Hardiog was in Wellington, he might represent the Council at tho Premier’s funeral on Thursday, r.nd further be authorised to procure a handsome wreath. This was agreed to.
BILLIARD SALOON.
Mr W. Rowell wrote asking for an extension of hours from tea to eleven for bis billiard saloon. Or Webb thought tho request was a reasonable one, aod should be granted by the Council. Cr Wbinray said that ten o'clock was late enough for working men to be out when they had to gat up early next day It would not be fair to the hotels, which closed at ten, to grant tho request. The Bpplie.tion was declined. THREE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS Mr W. L. Rees wrete asking the Council to join in foimiDg a joint committee of the three local bodies, vz.. the Borough Council, County Connci 1 , and Harbor Board, to meet him for tbe purpose of discussing questions in regard to the harbor, light railway to Tabora, end metal supply. The Mayor said the County Counoil and Harbor Board had already appointed oommittees. He suggested a committee of tbe whole Counoil should be appointed. A meeting of the County Council would be held on tbe following Friday, and S 3 Mr Marohant was about to report on the harbor, a meeting might be arranged at an early date. The Mayor’s suggestion waß adopted. A COMPLAINT.
A complaint from the Gisborne Sobcol Oommilleo io regard to an alleged infringe ment of the buildiDg regulations on the part of the owner of an adjoining property was received, but the Counoil deoided that they could not entertain it. The Town Clerk said the propntyowner in question was within his rights in refusing to comply with' the wishes of the School Committee.
VICTORIA. TOWNSHIP.
Mr H. K. Smith wrote objecting to the olodng of tho beach end of Roberta’ toad, Yiotor;a township. He asked for the obstroction to fce removed. Mr Bmuh also drew attention to the state of the fojtpath and damage done to his property. He asked that tho Ccunoil’s oveiseer rcpoit in regard to tho obstruction. Tho Gisborne G.s Company wrote notifying tbe OsuceU of their intontion to open up a number cf roads or foo’paths necessity for liyi’g uiiins or services. Tbe company asked the Council to fix the necessary street level psgs in position without delay. After discussion it was decided to take tho necessary steps to obtain levels in town and country; further, that the I matter bo referred to tho Works Committee.
REPORTS,
The report of tho Government Veterinarian in regard to slaughtering houses and butchers’ shops was most satisfactory. Cr Colley said the town was lo be congratulated upon having several up-to-date butchers’ shops, whioh were a credit to the place
INSPECTOR’S BE PORT,
Tbo Borough Inspector reported as follows: -Sinoe your last meeting I have bcoo inspecting in different parts of the borough, and find moat of tho places in a satisfactory condition of cleanliness, I have inspected all the boardinghouses that are applying for licenses at tnis meeting The bedrooms in each bouse inspected by me are in good order and are not overcrowded, The beds and bedding are oleaD, and each room is well found, The houses which requiro fire escapes are provided with rtp:s for that purpose, There are 12 boarding bouses in the borough, containing in nil 141 bedrooms, which accommodate 246 boarder*. I would recommend tbat the license applied for in Bach oaso be granted. I have also inspected all plaoes used for public worship, halls, theatres, and phoes tf public amusement, Bnd find that there is p'enty of exit in cate of a panic or fire. A gaslight at the baok of the pit in His Majesty’s Theatre is necessary, and should be attended to at onoe. I would rcoomtuond (hut lioouaes bo grouted

I have icooived a blook plan of seotlon No. CG, blook C, Whataupoko, the owner of whiob, Mr Haisman, wishes to build nine oottsges as shown on plan, and desires to koow from your Ooucoil whether they aro likely to mike tho road known as tho railway reserve 66ft
wide, or oould he build tho oottagos as shown on tbe plan within a oertain distance from the boundary. Disoussion took place in regard to Mr Haismah’s appliea'ion. Tbe plan submitted showed that tho applicant intondod to orcot ten oottsges on one aoro. It was deoidod to poiot out to Mr Haisman that as the road in question wes ml tho nooossary width that he must keep bis buildings 66 feet from the oontre of the road, as tho Publio Works Aol required tbs’- to be done before he oould lease or sell his property. OVERBEER’S REPORT.
Tho overseer reported :— Sioosyour last meeting a good deal of repairing has beon done, both on tbo paths slid roadway. Maoy places have been in need of gravel, whioh has been supplied as far aspossiblo. Gravel is ooming to band in a much better supply. We have a'so beon getting gravel from tbo Waikanaa beach tho last work or two, whioh has beon a help to tho paths Customhouse street : This work is now well advanced. I hope to commence gravelling the upper end to morrow, Wednesday, 20th lost. As requested at last meeting, I furnish you with an estimate of cost of formation of the various streets on the south side of the town. Tbe streets on this side of tbe town must be formed conjointly with eaoh other, as tbe streets running straight to tbe Waikanae must carry the water from all interseoiiDg streets. Customhouse street, together with Materoa and those parts of Kabulia Bnd Rangi eiree's that intersect Customhouse street, £IOO ; Lowe street with those parts of Kshutia aod Rangi streets joining, £4B; Bright slreet and remaining portion of Kahulia s'reet, £45 ; Grey street, thst portion betwem Gladstone road and Childers road, formation and gravel, £95 15s; Peel street, to fioish formation of paths and gravel same, £2B 8s ; to’al, £317 13. Every effort should bo made to have this work done before any water pipes ate laid io this patt of the town. Tbe report was adopted.
