Nakens in hie statement said he personally depreoated the attempt at assassination, but that it was impossible to betray one who had confided in him. He aoted in acoordanoe with his convictions,.not beoanse he sympathised with bis ideas, whioh he had always strongly opposed. The explanation has created a profound seesation in Madrid.
