NELSON NEWS.

(Pec Presa Associatioa.) Nelson, last night. A handsome memorial to troopers who lost their lives through the South Afrioan war was unveiled in the Queen’s Gardens to-day by the Hon. Pitt, who spoke on patriotism, and referred to the large nnm« ber who went to fight from New Zealand. He also spoke of future defenoe, and said addition to the navy was necessary. Those physically fit should be trained to defend our shores. Six hundred . volunteers paraded. The day was observed as a general holiday. The weather was perfect. There was a reoord attendance at the seven aside football tournament, ten matches providing a splendid display of this .interesting form of football, ?he Nelson Club was victorious.

The Bix aside hockey tournament also proved a great attraction, the play evok« ing enthusiasm.

As a Stale ooal depot is to be opened here immediately Mr Gaequoioge, of the Department, Is in Nelson arranging a site for ooai to be sold at 2Ss per ton, and it is stated Government steamers will be employed if arrangements cannot be made with the looal fleet.

The barn and stables of T. Sharp, of Wakefield, were destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. Three valuable horses wore burned to death. The loss is esti-. mated at .£SOO There was no insurance, Returned troopers were entertained at lunobeon. The Hon. Pitt was present. His services oe a volunteer officer were eulogised. He expressed pleasure at seeing 60 returned troopers on parade that day. He barely touobod politics, bat alluded to the honors being paid to Mr Sjddon and the estimation he was held in outside.
