CUSTOMS CONVENTION
SOUTH AFRICA GRANTS PREFER ENOE TO AUSTRALIA.

Melbourne, May 29. Mr Dtakin has received the following I cable from tho High Commissioner: “Johannesburg status that under the new Customs Convention preference has been extended to butter, oorn, graio, flour, | fodder, Quaker oats, fruits, larde, meats. Toe general ad valorem rate has been increased from 10 psr cent to 15 per cent, with a preference rebate of 3 per oent. The distinction between refined and unrefined sugar has been eliminated, which disposes of the difficulty in regard to Mauritius and Australian sugar. The preferential treatment is of course oortin* gent on the Commonwealth granting equiva'ent reciprocal privileges.
