PRICE OF LAMB.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.

Bir, —Wo shall be glad if you will publish tbo following extracts from let'ers loeoatly received from our London ageDts re drop in the price of New Zealand lamb:—

“ Tbo drop in tbo prico has been most noticeable io X nth Island lambs, quality of wbioh appoa's to be very uneven. New season’d Gisborno lambs are beiog sold at 4d to 4£d per lb ex store. The beet North Island are making £d per lb more,”

11 We are pleased to find the parcel of lambs of satisfactory quality, and were able to plaoe these at the full current price of 4f d p:r lb. The second quality lambs, however, on the other hand, were exceedingly inferior. The outlet for such carcases is extremely limited; indeed the bulk of these carcases compared unfavorably with some of the secondary Melbourne brands cow boieg tffe cd. It was only after very oontiderable trouble that we weie able to place them at 321. A parcel of 400 Gisborne lambs ex same steamer was sold at 3£d per lb at Smiths fir Id.”

The above extraots speak for themselves. It is very evident that if Gisborne growers wish to regaia for their lambs the position which they should undoubtedly hold in the London ma'ket, it will be neocssary for them to exero'se more care in selection. We oanDot impress too strongly upon growers the absolute necessity of sending nothing but prime stuff if they vti-h to obtain and keep a good name for their meat. One we'lknown firm of meat importers with whom we did a large amount of businees some time back refused to consider o.i.f. .offers I of Gisborne lamb on account of the uneven quality. It is quite evident that this district is capable of produciog a first-class ait’cle, so that there can be no exouse for shipping inferior stuff.—Yours faithfully, COMMON. SHELTON .1- CO., Ltd. | .
