A conference of looal rating bodies was held here yesterday to protest against the Harbor Board levymg a direot rate of a faitbing on the capital value of the district while they have lerge cash reserves. The protestants were poorly represented in numbers. The chairman of tbo Geraldine Road Board, the oonvener, the Mayor of Timaru, and the ohairman of Levels County Counoil were the chief speakers in favor of a reduced levy.-’ Tho Mayor, Mr Craigie, BUggest.d that the funds in hand would enable the Board to dispense with a levy altogether this year. Mr J. Fraeer, chairman of the Harbor Board, explained that tbs reservee had been aooumulated chiefly for the renewal of the main whatf, which would be neoeßeary soon, and euch provision was as legal as it was necessary, A recommendation wae declared carried, though only two voted for it, reoommendiDg the Board to reduce the levy from a farthing to threesixteenths.
