SHIPPING SERVICE.

REPLY TO MR BEDDON.

(Per Press Association.) Obristcburcb, last night

The Press has reoeivod a cable from London in reply to statements made by tbe Premier in bis Geraldine speech on March 16th, charging certain shipping companies with Lying to brealf down the West of England service established by the Government. The oab'e stites that tbe Shaw, Sivill, and Albion Company informs the “ Australian heading World ” that the tpiecb omveys quite a wrong impression; and was evidently based on erroneous information. No attempt has been made by any shipping oarfipany or combination to interfere with tbe fullest opportunities for direct .con.pyauoe to and from West Coast ports.' The other lines have not .competed in the carriage of prodqee to the West Coast, aqi will not do so unless the Federal line deprivet them pf London cargo, and so forces reprisals. There has been no change of aotion or polioy io regard to Amerioan cargo. The other lines oarried Amerioan cargo to Flaw Zea’and in their sailing ships apd steamers long before direct steam loadiogs from Amerioa wore thought of, nod since dtreot steamers from Njw York have been put on by the Federal liooand others tbe same thing has tern cont’nued The Now Zsaland liners are in no sense controlled by any American combine.
