The Japanese admiral and ofiioers were enteitained by the Lord Mayor at dinner at the Town Hail. There was a brilliant gathering, including Lord Northoote, Governor General, Sic Harry Rawson, Governor of the State, and Admiral Fawkes. L ord Northoote said he was eonvinoed that neither Britain nor Japan would have oonttacted the alliance if they had not honestly and siuoerely believed hat in forming such an alliance they wle®. giving the world a strict guaiaotea of future peace and commercial development. Ho trusted they would units the white eoßign of Britain to the banner of the Rising Sun of JapaD. an allianoe that would prove indissoluble. Mr Reid, in submitting the toast of Admiral Shinamura, paid a tribute to Japan's achievements.

Admiral Shinamura, replying, said he hoped the allianoe would be renewed again and again, not for aggroasion, but to safeguard peace. He declared the Japanese successes at sea were largely due to the fact that most of tba warships had bien built iu Britain, and were commauded and effieored by men who had learned their profession from the British navy. Sir Harry Rawson uud Admirai Fawkes, in their speeches, welcomed tns vi-it of the squadron, and the ADglo-Japanese alliance.
