The Industries and Commerce Depart inont received the following cable fcoa tbe High Commissioner, dated London sth May : —“ Dull ea'o for all qualities oi mutton. Tho supply is inoreasiug, anc there is an inclination to force sales, which makes the market weaker, though actually at a lower average price. Canterbury brands to-day brought for light and 3fd for heavy weights. North Island brands were selling at B;d for best quality, and 3jjd for seoond qcsJity. The lamb market was weak, stocks being distributed amoDgst agents, who were pushing sales at low prioes, quoted on the ini creasing output. The average prices were 4|d and 4g-i for Canterbury and other than Canterbury brands respectively. The beef maikst was quiet, with no change in pr'oes to report. The butter market is quiet, but firm, with a fair demand forthu
better grades. Supplies are increasing from Ireland and Siberia. 1 The average price for choicest New Zealand butter today was 101 s per owt., Australian 965, Argentine 965, Danish 105 s, S berian 96s per owt. The cheese market is a shade weaker. White made 60s per cwt. There* is a small supply of colored on hani,v which is quoted at 65a per cwt. There" is,, no change in tho price of hemp, and the market is quiet for spot lots. There is a better demand for distant deliveries. Cocksfoot seed market is quiet, bus£r&.. waiting for samples of the new crop- The wool maiket is firm, with more inquiry, Current quotations are :—Bradford ■tope, - 36’s, lot? crossbreds, Is s|d per lb ; 40’s low orossbreds, Is 6|d ; 44's low crossbreds, Is 56's quarterbreds, 2s lid : 60’s Merinos#! 28 4*.
