EDUCATION.

DISABILITIES OF THE BACK BLOCKS.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The question of affording better facilities for the education of children in the back blocks of Auckland district has been before the Education Board for some time. A report on the eubj-ct was submitted by Mr Petrie, chief inspector, at a meeting of the Board to-day. He states | that in genoral each oasa of this kind would haye to be considered on its merits. Some cases could be met by employing itinerant teachers, wbo would teach in raeh family for a week at a lima; in ail otter cases the usual grant of £6 for each unit of average attendance should be offered rn condition (1) that tfco head of the family makes provision for instruction of children in aooordanoe with the I arms of the Eluoation Ac's, and (2) that an inspector of the Board certifies jear by yrar that the. instruction given is reasonably effioient.

Mr H. J. Grcenelalo, M,H.R., said he bad recently completed a tour through the I remote back blocks, where in many places there were mere Bp, ologies for roads, and it was certainly regrettable to eee bow I children were penalised as regards educa- ' fcion because their parents were obliged to go away bank and carry on the laudable work of pioneering, The appointment of itinerant or travelling t j aohera and the establishment of household eoboole was, he considered, au absolute necessity. He thought the Education Department Bhould be approached on the matter. Mr A. R. Harris concurred, and the repoit of the inspector was adopted, and referred to the Department.
