At the Polioa.Cjurt yesterday morning, <• first offender for drunkenness was dismissed with a caut'on. The s.e. Wimmera arri\ed at Bluff, from Hobart, with an English mail, at 2.45 yesterday afternoon. The Gisborne Shecpfarmers’ e.s. Kotare sails for East Coast ports and Auckland to day. The sitting of the Arbitration Court, to bave been held to-day, bas been adjourned until May 2nd. In another column Mr G. Kronfeld, the well known Island merohant, notifies that he has taken Mr F. E. N. Or audio into partnership. Mr L. W. MoGlashaD, representing the well known Auokland firm of Messrs Monnio and Dey, is at present visiting G'sbornc.

Mr F. A. Peters, sole proprietor of P.tors' celebrated pile ours, is visiting the East Coast district w't'o a view of appointing agents. The firm have their headquarters in Sydney, but a branob business bas been opened in Auckland. Tbe special- orockery sole at present being carried on by Messrs Miller and Oraig. in tbe premises of Mr S. T. Stanton, Peel street, offers great altraotioDS to householders. The sale yesterday was largely attended, and some excellent ware was disposed of at exceptionally low rates. The sale will bo continued at 2o'clook this afternoon. At tbe Mag’strets's Court yesterday morniog, Wi Honi (Mr W. D. Lyanar) sued his nepbew, Allan Goodnigh (Mr T. Alston Coleman) for £7, or tbe return of a horse, together wiih £3 damages. After bearing the evidence for the plaintiff, tbe further hearing of the oase was adjourned uotil to-day.

Mossrs Common, Sholton and Co. are buyers of fat shoop and lambs Shipments of oysters, fish, and fruit are received at Chilton’s by every boat.
Mails despatched from Melbourne via Brindisi on March 21th, arrived ! in London on April 20th. In the Borough estimates for tho year the sum of £25 is set down for the purpose cf subsidising the district school baths. Mr W Morgan, saddler, announces that he has removed into his new shop in Hall’s buildings, Peel street, near the Times office.
On the motion of Cr. Harding, the Borough Council last evening decided to reinstate tho Lowe street footbridge. This work will be proceeded with at once.
The attraction at the Elite skating rink to-morrow evening will be the couples race, which should ensure a large attendance. A race for ladies will shortly be introduced into the programme.
Messrs Cox Bros, have oponed an up-to-dato tailoring establishment in Hall’s Buildings, Peel street. A large assortment of tweeds from tho best manufacturers havo just been received, and inspection of tho same is invited." The Borough Council are renewing their efforts to keep open the road leading from Lowe street to the Wai« kanae beach. The estimates for the year provide- the sum of £IOO for a bridge across the Waikanae. Steps are being taken to amalgamate the City and Gisborne Rilles’ bands. A joint committee from the two bands and tho Borough Council has been appointed, and will meet in a day or two. Crs. Harding, Lysnar, and Miller will represent the Borough Council.
At the mooting of the Borough Council last ovening it was agreed to give pound for pound subsidy, up to £l5O, for some improved sort of protection to prevent the encroachment of the sea on the Waikanae beach. Cr. Bright said the Council was not justified in spending so much money, as the work was of too experimental a nature. It was only wasting £2OO in attempting to stay tho forces of Nature.
There was a large attendance of natives at the opening of the Native Land Court yesterday morning. Wi Pore, on behalf of the natives, formally welcomed Judge Jones and the interpreter (Mr Goffe) back to Gisborne, and expressed the hope that the Judge would now be allowed to stop and finish the business, and not in the meantime be taken away to other portions of the colony. What, 1 ’ asked the ex-M.H.R., “are the Government doing with all the other Judges that they havo lately appointed that they should take the Judge that we look upon as the Judge belonging to our district ? If they ask you to go again,’’ he said with emphasis, addressing the Judge, “ tell them you are too busy, and if they won’t listen to you then let your Maori friends know and we will make our voice heard ” The Judge smiled at this sally, and then thanked the natives for their welcome, and counselled them not to dally in bringing their claims forward, as he would have to leave for the Coast in June.
