CABLES BROKEN.

(Per Press Association.) Wakapuaka, last night,

The Eastern Extension Company’s two cables connecting Sydney with Wakapu aka were interrupted at tou minutes past eleven to-day. Mr P, H. Selfe, the New Zialaod manager, states that the point cf breakage is 339 knots from Wakopuaks. He thinks that communication may be restored in about throe weeks’ time. Every effort will be made to restore tbe lines as speedily as possible. The inter' ruplion oame so suddenly that it is surmised thero has been asutmtrine disturb- , auoe, as in ordinary breaks there is usually some warning, but there was none in this case. Only a fortnight ago an exhaustive test of the cables was made, and they were found to be sound.

Wellington, Inst night. Both the Eastern Extension cables have gone between Wakapuaka and Sydney. So far nothing is known as to the cause. All Australian traffie will now have to go by the Pacifio cable from Doubtless Bay to Queensland.

OFFICIALS’ OPINION. By telegraph, Presi Ats’n, Copyright Reoeived 11.43 p.m., April 23. Sydney, April 23. The Eastern Extension officials are of opinion that the interruption is not due to volcanic or earthquake disturbance. They state that one cabla is broken and in the other there is a very bad fault. Both beiDg interrupted all the same time is merely a ooinoidence.
