Wellington, last nigEt, The Department of Industries and Commerce has reoeived the following oable from tbe High Commissioner, London, dated April 21st: —The mutton market ia quiet. The trade is very disappointing) there being only a band-to-month demand. The average price of Canterbury mutten is 4JI per lb for light weights, and heavy weights, The average price of North Island mutton is Byid. There is a good demand for all lamb, but prices are weaker. The 'stock on hand is heavy, the supply exceeding the demand. Low prices are certainly increasing the output. The average price of Canterbury brand is 4J-d other than Canterbury 4: 3 f d. There is a belter demand for beef, and the etocks of New Zealand on hand are light. The average price of New Zealand hindquarters is 3sd, forequarters 2|J. There is a better demand prevailing in the butter market for lines of the very best quality. The market is Bteady for choicest New Zealand at 100 s per owt, Danish is quoted at 1103, and Siberian at 983. The cheese market is dull for white makes at 62s per owl. There is a firm demand for oolored, however, at 663. Tbe demand for hemp has considerably fallen off, and the market ia consequently dnll. The average prioe Of Wellington grade, on spot, to-day is £B2 per ton, and for April to June shipment* £3l is quoted. Wool is firm, The market is quiet, but a good feeling prevails. The cookefoot seed market is fair at 58s per owt for 171 b, bright, oleaD, dressed New Zealand seed.
London, April 20.
Butter.—There are complaints of the improper grading of Victorian batters. .Retailers are returning some marked " first grade,” end asserting that it is only worth 82s. The butter market is steady. Danish is nnohanged. Choicest Australian—*'' soaroe, and sells at 965; unsalted, 108 s. Secondaries are neglected. New Zealand, 99s to 100 s, and is selling readily owing to its excellent quality. Cheese.—There is slow trade in cheese. New Zealand white, 61s ; colored, 6Ss.
Wool,—The Bradford wool maiket is brisk, with a good inquiry, especially for orosebreds. Common sixties, 27d ; super, 27Jd ; forty-sixes, 19£d ; forties, 18£i. Christchurch, last night. There is a fair amount of business passing in wheat, grocers apparently being more willing to sell on a basis of 3s at oountry stations, and at the same time there ii a good disposition on the part of both millers and merohants to buy. Tasoan is most in demand, and there is also a good inquiry for pearl, while Hunters are not so ready of Bale, A few extra wrime lots of Tuscan have been placed at 3s o£d, but the general run of eaies for this variety has been at 2s, Amongst lines reported to have been sold were 3400 hushels of Tuscan at 3s, 2000 bushels in parcels at 3s, 1500 bushels (also in lots) et 3s, 1800 bushelß of pearl at 2s lid, 1000 bushels of Hunters at 2s lOd, and fowl wheat at 2s 7d (all at oountry stations). There are very few oats offering, and prioes have firmed about Is per bushel all round. No transactions of aoy size are reported.
All the best samples of malting barley have apparently changed hands, but there has been a fair turn ovor .io medium quality at about Is per bushel less than was paid at the opening of the season. The first of the new season’s sow grass has been purohaeed at 84, and it is pooted that the orop will be abort. Potatoes are firmer, and L 9 is now / being paid for good conditioned Bamples, ‘ Onions are slightly easier.
