TRADES AND LABOR.

■ .(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A large deputation has been set up by the Wellington Trades Oounoil to wait on the Premier with referenoe to the reported intention of the Government to gazette a new' industrial district extending from Woodville to G'sbome, and including Dannevirke, Hastings, and Napier. The delegates to the Counoil ore strongly opposed to the creation of a now district, because many uuioDs are now workiog under awards wbioh apply to towns wbioh the new district would cut out of the operations of awards. The result wonld be, in the opinion of members, !o annihilate trades unionism in oountry districts.

A letter has been reoeived at the T.ales Oounoil from the Wellington Provincial ladustrial .AsisooiatioD, supporting the OoudoU’s opposition to the oreation of a new district.

It reoommended " That in view of the persecution a la ge number of unionists and those who take part in the affairs of unionism are subject to, provision be made for the pres vention of suoh praotioas by the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, that the Government be requested to make special inquiries into oasts involving discharge from employment or boyootting of any unionist that may be reported to the local labor (ffiee by any registered union, the uuicn to prooure evidenoe in suoh oase a , and the Departmpot to prosecute. It is further recommended that every Oounoil set up a standing committee to proteot the interests of unionists in this respect by inquiring into alleged cases of persecution in their district, and to assist the union in procuring evidence and tsating the merits of each case before reporting the same to the Labor Department, and failing satisfaction being obtained through the Department to take such steps as will terminate the boyoott and have justice done to the aggrieved party.”
